Lotta Blokker
Born: 1980, Amsterdam, The Netherlands
At the age of 19, Lotta started her education at the Florence Academy of Art in Florence, Italy, where she
completed the drawing and sculpture program. She has been instructing at the school for two years now. This
year Lotta's work was accepted into the National Portrait Society exhibit in London, where she was chosen as an
upcoming winner for the Tiranti Award for her talent in portraiture. Her sculptures have been exhibited in
Amsterdam, Germany and New York. Lotta has currently been commissioned to sculpt a life-size piece for Brewleys
in Dublin.
Lotta has a strong passion for sculpting heads. During the process she spends a great deal of time examining
the sitter, searching for their strongest expression. In her latest piece ("Precipice") she has used this
technique and tried to achieve expression and character in every part of the human body. Even the base of the
sculpture has a function to stimulate the mood.
Lotta is very challenged and inspired by sculptors like Riemenschneider, Donatello and Rodin. She finds that
in their works nothing is overlooked, but decisions have been made on where to capture the viewer's attention,
both aesthetically as well as psychologically. As an effect, wood, stone or bronze starts to breath and speaks
to the viewer through his/her "skin".
