Johnson Hagood
American (b. 1957)
Johnson Hagood is a painter working in Charleston, South Carolina who paints the ephemeral luminous beauty of life on the rapidly disappearing barrier islands and marshes of the South Carolina Lowcountry that surround him.
He studied at the College of Charleston under the reputable William Halsey & Corrie McCallum.
A dedicated student of American realist art, Hagood is especially intrigued by the nocturne work of Frederick Remington and Charles Rollo Peters. In addition to landscapes, Johnson has recently been painting rural and urban scenes in South Carolina, another part of the vanishing South.
“I’m trying to capture a fleeting moment on paper or canvas, so I don’t make anything overt. You have to, and should, look at a painting for a while to really understand it. If it evokes feeling in you, or triggers some far-away memory, then I’ve done what I set out to do.”

His work is included in the collections of Bank of America, BellSouth, City of Charleston, Carolina First Bank, Gibbes Museum of Art, Greenville County Museum of Art, Morris Museum of Art, Roper Hospital, Safety Kleen Corporation, Wild Dunes Corporation, and numerous notable private collections.
In 2011, Hagood was the focus of a solo show at the Greenville County Museum of Art.
