Jussi Pöyhönen specializes in still lifes, landscapes, and portraits carefully observed from life. His interest in academic realism took him to Florence, Italy where he studied classical painting and drawing at the Florence Academy of Art. In 2006, he completed a Master of Fine Arts degree from Aalto University in Helsinki, Finland and studied under notable Norwegian painter Odd Nerdrum known for his anecdote and narrative.
Today Jussi works out of studios in both the U.S. and Finland. Though he studied European 19th century academic traditions and has been influenced by Russian 20th century Social Realism, his work is evolving more toward an impressionistic way of painting, with an emphasis on light, air and color. Pöyhönen has participated in numerous exhibitions in Europe and USA, being awarded the prestigious Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation grant in 2010.
