Kate Griswold has studios in Eastern Massachusetts and South Carolina. Over the last thirteen years, her focus has been photographing birds, particularly birds of prey and other large birds, in the wild. The artist “spends many hours outside, waiting and watching” for the perfect image. Back in the studio, Griswold adds painterly backgrounds to her photographs, “it forces us to see them [the subject] differently, out of context,” she says.
With this new body of work Griswold expanded her focus to the larger fauna of Botswana and Zambia. So often we hear about existential threats facing ecosystems, but these portraits ask us to consider the fragility of individuals, each animal on its own.
A portion of sales will be donated to conservation efforts in Africa.
